BSI Kitemark
The British Standards BSI Kitemark is a registered certification mark owned and operated by the BSI Group. It is one of the most recognised quality and safety symbols in the world and offers true value to both consumers and businesses that adopt the practices needed to gain certification. For manufacturers of items such as crash helmets, the visible confirmation of quality and safety offered by the Kitemark can make the essential difference in consumer purchase consideration.
The Kitemark logo consists of a capital ‘B' (British) above the letter ‘S' (standard). The enclosure of the ‘S' by two lines is what gives the logo its distinctive shape and indeed its name. Kitemark is one of the oldest logos and quality marks in existence and is recognised and used worldwide.
Although originating in 1903, the Kitemark was first used for tramway rail specification, and was not a quality symbol for other products until around 1926. Over the next 20 years the Kitemark's primary use was in relation to electrical fittings. It was not until the 50's and 60's and the explosion of consumer goods, that the Kitemark was adopted to identify products manufactured to meet the BSI's British Standards.
Today BSI operates over 400 Kitemark schemes covering a range of products from alarm systems to crash helmets. Although not generally a legal requirement for manufacturers, the Kitemark logo is thought to be recognised as a trusted mark of quality by over 80% of the UK population and accepted as a sign of high safety standards.
Registration and certification for the BSI Kitemark is only available from the BSI Group, and products must meet all relevant British, European and International standards and specifications. The word ‘Kitemark’ and the Kitemark logo are registered trademarks of The British Standards Institution.
